Final & Research

Since the outbreak of the swine flu, I decided that I wanted to do something that would create awareness about the sickness. I had grand plans of using an interactive flash game that would educate but also be engaging. Natrually I ran out of time and had to go to a backup plan. I have seen signs around campus telling people to wash their hands, but there's nothing visual about it. So I created a sign that is more visual and gives helpful tips on the swine flu. I then created another sign which was more of a random idea. I noticed when searching for images, I never pick the first picture. So I put in and random idea, word, or person that I could think of this is what happened.

New Media Scavenger Hunt

I think new media is the exploration of new technologies to see what there possibilities are and what new inventions can be created.

Things that come to mind are those that I have experienced or a friend has told me how useful they are.

1) Iphone apps
2) New sign-in at the airports with touch screens
3) Bluetooth in vehicles
4) Those dancing or walking people downtown at intersections
5) Museums have a bunch of new media things to engage the person viewing it.

I think that the iphone apps are the coolest and useful out of everything on my list. Apple is obviously the one that created the iphone but several companies have created the apps that you can download for the phone. The amount of things you can do with the iphone is awesome from GPS to locate your parked car, to the phone acting as a level for when your hanging things up in your house. The apps are created through software engineering and are created for all iphone users. I believe that all phones in the next couple of years will have apps as well so everyone can use this great idea. I don't think I will use much of this research for my final but I may do a research project on it and use that as my final showing how some apps work or something like that.

The Bleepin' Project

As I thought about ideas, I thought about creating a game in Flash that would have an infinite number of outcomes but then I thought of a decision that could be very crucial in my personal life. This past week I was asked to stay at my internship that I'm working at for the summer. I had been pursuing other internships that would be able to give more hours for the summer. The thing is I love my internship that I'm at right now but I know that I'm not going to be offered a full time position since it is filled by the guy I'm working on projects with. So my option is try and get an internship somewhere else that may lead to a full time position and maybe higher hourly pay. I decided to stay with my current company and I just told them this last week. I decided only working four days a week over the summer will be awesome and will give me time to do all the road trips my friends and me have planned. I also already know what to expect and I know I will love it in the summer. So how does this relate to this project? Well this decision could determine where I'm going to get a full time job and even what state I'm going to live in. Lets say I make some contacts with the current job and they offer me a job in Indy, I would love that. Let's say I went and worked at a different internship and it got me to a full time job at some other company. Basically what I'm saying is that I just changed the course of my life and after thinking about it, I can't believe how casually I made the choice. It's amazing how crazy things can look once you actually go into detail about and what it's effects are. But I live my life laid back and just go with what i love to do so that's what I'm doing.

What the Bleep was that movie about?

I stayed and watched the movie for about 45 minutes before I left.  I felt like it was pretty interesting but seemed repetitive to the point that I felt like I needed to get other things done in my life.  I think it went into extreme detail about everyday objects n life.  I think it over examined things that I just don't care about.  There comes a point where I just let things happen how there supposed to and don't worry about how every little thing works or how it happens.  I think I would not be able to have fun with life if all I did was analyze why things happen, because then I think I would miss out on the fun stuff happening around me while I'm just thinking about why they are fun and why I sense there fun or what in my body causes me to feel like I'm having fun. I just let it happen and go with it.

Client Excersize

I thought what better client to have then Chuck Norris. Although I was a little worried about not being able to make him happy because he could very easily roundhouse kick me to the face. I think I was able to show everything that he stands for, and that's Freedom and Justice. So Happy Birthday Chuck Norris!

Horseshoe Handymen

The word that I found in a magazine was horseshoe and the idea that Beth gave me was "celebrating handymen". I actually typed into google, "Horseshoe handymen" and I was shocked at what all came up. I didn't realize every piece of furniture could be built out of horseshoes until I did this assignment. thehorseshoeguy.com is where I found all these ridiculous pictures but he had like a million more I could of chosen which I don't know if thats sad or just crafty on his part. I decided there was nothing more that could celebrate handymen and horseshoes then showing all the stuff a handyman coul build with horseshoes.

Class after Spring Break

It felt pretty weird being in class today after not being there for like a month.  We talked about what people did for the randomness assignment and they showed it if they had something to show.  I thought the DDR impression was really cool how he tied in the whole seeing sideways literally into the game.  That was about the only one that really stuck out to me as I can't really remember the others.  I thought the second half of class was really cool.  I was a skeptic at first but I think it turned out really well.  It's amazing how one idea can really get everyone going as far as adding on to each others ideas.  I think the best thing we did was get like 5 people in the group in order to get every ones minds together to get something.  I think our NUVO bobble head turned out really well and got a lot of weird looks from the law students so that was a plus.

The Idea Assignment

I read this assignment the Friday I left for spring break. Obviously since I am just now doing this, I was not able to do the assignment. I think if I absolutely wanted to get the assignment done I could've but I just have this rule on spring break that I don't look at a computer or even think about school. That was exactly what I did and it was amazing because we were busy the whole time in LA and San Diego. That may mean I don't get any points for this assignment but I would say it was worth it as I had the time of my life, and just took my mind off of work and school and it was great.

Class Response 7

Again I will be completely honest, today After my first classes, I just did not feel like going to another class after that. I was lazy today and didn't make it to class but I did accomplish other things I have planned on doing but hadn't gotten around to it. I got my grocery shopping done which I absolutely hate doing and I cleaned my room up from the mess that I created over the last week and weekend. Although I didn't make it to class I did accomplish a lot of things that I had been putting off. I do however plan on coming to the next class

Can I finish this Reading?

I am actually posting this as I am in the middle of the reading because honestly, I can't seem to get through it. I am seriously zoning out constantly during the reading. I do know that there are two brilliant people of their time questioning a lot of occurrences on earth, the universe, and existence. I don't know if other people do this, but when I am given a lengthy reading assignment, it is nearly impossible for me to get through it and understand whats going on because my mind is thinking about 10 things at once and I can't focus on the reading if I'm not totally interested in it. I also started wondering if this assignment was given as a way to see who actually would really read all of this! I will try to go back and get through some more of this but honestly I don't think I will finish it. I wish I was more interested in the subject but maybe once people explain it in class tomorrow I will have more interest in what the reading is trying to say.

Final Project?

So I have figured out that I kind of like some sort of guidelines when it comes to projects. The idea of being able to do anything is crazy to think about and all the possibilities out there. So I have come up with a few ideas, but nothing final thats for sure. I am going to LA for spring break and I figure this would be a great time for me to do something unique out there as other people probably won't be out there between now and the final project due date. I am not sure what I would do, but I plan on taking my video camera and digital camera with me so I would probably do something with that. I kind of want to just do something on my own time when I'm bored in Indiana so I may just end up doing something crazy around here. Ideas are going to keep coming up with me as I think about this so it may change day to day until I have something I really want to do.

Bliss Time

I very happy to see what our assignment was this week in that we could just take 3 hours to do whatever makes us happiest. I didn't have to worry about this, as I maybe to much time doing what makes me happiest instead of school and work. I would say going somewhere on vacation makes me the happiest but being a college student, this just wasn't possible to do in a weeks time with no money. I also love going to my lake in summer and doing stuff outside, but again the fact that I live in Indiana and it was freezing outside this took away any of that possibility. I decided I have the most fun on the weekend nights with my friends doing crazy stupid things. So even though these times last like 8 hours at a time, I'll just say this made me the happiest. It involved going to the bars and then continuing to drink back at my house with about 20 or 25 people. These nights make me love the college life and I realize this won't happen much longer as people start to get married or move away so I cherish the college weekends while I still can.

Plastic Bag

So I was unable to make it to class last week as I missed my first class in like 3 semesters. So I went to oncourse and saw the plastic bag assignment posted and of course I was way out of the loop not having been in class to see what the deal is with the plastic bag. I saw people were posting things about making music with the bag but I thought my music would've been lame anyway so I didn't try it. I'll be honest, I literally spent no time with a plastic bag and didn't even pick one up so that's documenting my time. Instead I went online and researched plastic bags and found some interesting facts about them as I didn't realize that they will be around forever in landfills and stuff. I also found some videos on youtube that were pretty funny to me and are posted below. One is a guy that finds ten stupid things to do with plastic bags and the other video is people video taping a guy dancing with a bag without him knowing it.

Making another class see sideways

So in class we decided to do something random and that was to flip all the desks in random places and stack others as sculptures. This was just to see the next class reactions to our actions. I personally felt bad as we were doing it and probably would've never done it if no one else did. After it was complete the room looked pretty crazy and I thought the next class would do nothing but laugh at the whole situation. But as we were leaving there were some students for the next class and they were mad that we were just leaving and not putting any of the chairs back in their standard positions. I felt bad as we just walked away as they were wanting an explanation. I think that since the first couple of students were upset with our actions, that their attitude spread through the rest of the students that came in for the next class and they all became very angry with our actions. I think any kind of mood is contagious whether it be positive or negative. We probably put that whole class in a bad mood and it probably wasn't the most pleasant class in the world. I think we should probably do something in a form of an apology or an explanation of our actions. I say we just write really big on the dry erase board that we're sorry or something silly like that.

Senseless

So for our newest assignment we were to take away one of our senses for 3 hours and document the experience. After the experiment is completed we are to determine what another sense could be. I chose to go three hours without the ability to hear and i did this by placing earplugs in my ears to block out as much noise as I could. I chose to do this experience in a controlled environment of my house as I was home in Fort Wayne for the weekend. My parents found this to be annoying as I did not tell them of why I was doing this and they were trying to ask me something and I had no idea what they were trying to say. I found that not being able to hear was very hard and very frustrating and at times I felt like just taking my earplugs out because of it but I stuck to the assignment. I decided that after this ordeal that I wanted to come up with another sense that could replace the hearing one the best that I can. The sense would actually use technology and would be called iTalk and would use your brainwaves to communicate to others. It would detect the vibrations and soundwaves of others and convert them to voices inside your head so you would know what other people are saying to you. And you would be able to just think of what to say to others and the voice box would communicate your thoughts exactly and clearly. It wouldn't just say anything you think of, only things that you mean to say to people because that would get somebody into some big trouble.

The What If.....Class

We started the class by finishing the words Creat....,Innovat....., Inquir..... with whatever we could think of. I was a little curious as to what this would accomplish, but soon found out it was to define the differences between similar words. I found out that these three words related to the scientific method and it very important for New Media students to think in this way to be at our best creativity. I also found that there is a bunch of different beliefs in the room in terms of religion and it really showed when creation was talked about and agnostics came up. I think that really brings a lot of different ideas to the room in terms of how people think and how their morals are. I think overall the what if questions made me think of solutions to other what ifs and helped me come up with more what if questions. The part at the end of class where we messed up the entire room was kind of cool but I don't think I would've gone to that extreme. I felt kind of bad walking out of the room and the class coming was wondering why we were putting the chairs back the way they should be.

2nd Class

This class was very interesting and I was looking forward to what other people had come up with for the egg assignment. I was very disappointed in my own experiment for my own egg but was looking forward to what other people had done. I really like the stop motion one where it resembled reproduction, I thought it was very clever. I also like the one with all the different pictures taken of the egg and from all different angles. I thought there were a lot of great ideas and a lot that I wish that I had thought of.

The Eggsperiment

The egg assignment was the most interesting one I have ever received and really expected nothing less for this class.  I was completely blank in terms of what I was going to do for the assignment as there were absolutely no guidelines.  So all I had to do is something creative with the egg which could be anything.  I have to be honest that even when I started messing with the egg I had no clue what I was actually going to do.  My plan was to cut a little hole on one end of the egg and and then make a design on a plate with the gooey stuff and place the yoke separate somewhere in the design.  I was also going to take the shell and brake it up into pieces and incorporate it into the design.  This was my plan, however it ended up being a disaster and look nothing like I imagined.  The consistency of the gooey stuff didn't come out like I thought and it all kind of just merged together and just looked a puddle of clear goo.  And then after I messed with it to come up with some kind of design, I tried to place the egg yoke on the plate and it broke so it all just looked like a big mess.  

So what I learned from the assignment is that trial and error was very present in my idea and it was just a big error.  Although my idea didn't pan out how I wanted it to, I liked the idea of the assignment of doing something other then cooking and eating the egg.  I think it's a good idea to look at other common objects around and think possibilities they could be used for other then their common use.
